This is a fantastic article. I really appreciate your perspective on shame. On a totally different scale, I’ve been trying my hand at some public shaming around the sudden rampant problem we have in my neck of the urban woods with people allowing their dogs to run amok off-leash. It’s like every public space has become an un-fenced dog park, and frankly, it’s not helping maintain a social distance. If I, jogging with my dog on a leash, happen upon a gaggle of twenty people with as many dogs who all suddenly run up on me (dogs and then their apologetic owners) how is this helping the situation?? It doesn’t. So I’ve started taking photos of people and letting them know that I’m forwarding them to the police, who will hopefully at least phone it in with enforcing some leash laws as they scream at people from their cars to maintain six feet of distance. If they won’t, I’ll start posting and let the chips fall where they may.
